Legend also has it that the writer Mistral already knew the composer Gounod, whose talent he admired, and invited him to Saint-Rémy-de-Provence: "Provence and I await you." Mistral gladly accepted to entrust the libretto of Mireille to Charles Gounod, who wished to immerse himself in Provençal culture and atmosphere for the opera. Thus, on March 23, 1863, he settled into an 18th-century coaching inn, the Auberge Ville-Verte, located just opposite the church in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. He composed the music while walking in the Saint-Clerg valley in the Alpilles mountains, and in the evenings he would return and go to the church to play the notes inspired by the Alpilles. He wrote, "Nearby, twenty minutes from Saint-Rémy, in the mountains, lies the most beautiful valley one could ever see: It's pure Italy; it's even Greek.
